William, an aspiring composer fallen on hard times, is hired by the eccentric Lord Haddington to give piano lessons to his daughter, Aurelia.

* William performs for a bored audience and questions his purpose as a musician.
* After the concert, William reunites with his old friend Gilbert, who will be touring Europe with his troupe. The encounter leaves him envious.
* That night, William is approached by the eccentric Lord Haddington, who offers him a well-paid job teaching his daughter to play the pianoforte.
* William accepts the offer and arrives hungover to the first lesson — only to be completely taken aback by Aurelia, Lord Haddington’s daughter. To his surprise, she's his age, and her beauty and confidence are striking.
* Their lessons begin, and tension quickly builds as they sit close by each other before the piano.
* The spark between them intensifies — Aurelia touches William during their duet, and he struggles to stay composed.
* William, newly inspired, rushes to gather music to impress Aurelia with his knowledge.
* After running into each other on the streets of London, Aurelia pulls William into a secluded corner of the manor, where they begin a secret affair.
